LONDON, September 24, 2024: Low-Temperature Polysilicon (LTPS) LCD technology has surpassed 30% market share in the automotive display sector, experiencing significant growth in 2Q24. This growth has been powered by the increasing adoption of head-up displays (HUD) and room mirror applications, according to Omdia’s Automotive Display Market Tracker. LTPS LCD is rapidly gaining traction, outpacing other display technologies such as AMOLED, a-Si LCD, and Oxide LCD within the automotive industry. In 2023, LTPS LCD demand was primarily driven by in-cell touch center stack displays. However, in the first half of 2024, the focus shifted to HUD and room mirror displays, where LTPS LCD’s advantages—such as high resolution/brightness, better in-cell touch integration, and slimmer borders—make it the preferred choice for these essential automotive applications.Omdia’s data reveals that LTPS LCD captured 30% of total shipments in the second quarter of 2024, up from 28% in Q1 2024, and is expected to reach 33% by the end of the year. In comparison, AMOLED holds a smaller share, despite its dominance in smartphones.

Chinese manufacturers, especially Tianma, have shown remarkable growth, with Tianma's market share increasing from 6.6% in 2023 to 10.8% in 1H 2024. Other Chinese makers, such as China Star and BOE, also saw notable gains, with China Star at 10.4% and BOE at 5.2%.

Meanwhile, LG Display leads the market with 24.5% of the total share in 1H 2024, surpassing Japan Display, which holds 20.4%. Other key players, including AUO, Sharp, and Kyocera, maintain significant shares, though the shift towards Chinese manufacturers is evident.

"The shift in LTPS LCD applications from center stack displays to head-up displays and room mirror displays demonstrates the evolving demands of the automotive market," said Stacy Wu, Senior Principal Analyst, Omdia.

"As automotive displays become more integral to the driving experience, LTPS LCD will continue to play a critical role, particularly in applications requiring high resolution, brightness, better in-cell touch integration, and slim borders."
